IMHO,
The lack of driver training falls into 2 buckets. 1st is a lack of knowledge of the driving laws of the land. Things like how to stop at a 4-Way stop, and how to merge onto an interstate and what "Lane Disciple" means. Add to that things like when it's acceptable to be courteous and allow someone to break in line or to turn ahead of their turn (IMO these things should only happen when there are no others who will be made to wait longer. Also, when you are at the head of a 3 car train and are going 10mph *under* the posted speed, you must pull over and let them by - or speed up. And other stuff like that ---

Then there are people who will let 20 school buses out in front of them - making a long line of cars behind wait - not acceptable.

After the "Driving Laws & Driving Courteous" have been covered, there needs to be classes in how to control the car in all situations v- on snow, ice and water... and dry as well..

I think that should take care of it. And one more thing - no pass - with a least a grade of 90% or more and no drive. There's no such thing as "That's not fair" when it comes to my safety --

And that's the way it is......

;-)

Dr. Steve sez ". . .The track requires a special skill set that is not
usually acquired by drivers on the street, but are also not necessary and
rarely used by them."

Nice write up Dr. Steve - per usual. Quite a stable and quite a breadth.
Ahem, um, my response to the above statement would be - the number of times
I made a spinal cord reaction to a bad situation driving in Los Angeles -
off the freeways (where on the weekend half the cars are not registered
because they can't pass smog check or afford insurance) has saved my bacon
many times.

I attribute that to many hours time trialing and track practice, um, many
years ago, now that I reflect back on those halcyon days. Nevertheless - I
enjoy driving and try to stay sharp - no on/off gas pedal, sea-sick
movements. I try to be smooth in the turn entrances and exits, and now all
of this is done under the speed limits, on normal streets.

As Dan Gurney once said to a reporter who asked him how often he practiced - he responded - every time I get in a car - and I don't have to go fast to do it. But then there were times that the clatter of mental rosary beads were louder than the squeal of tires - but I have never heard of him involved in
an off track crash. Maybe he has - heh heh
