Some old timers I know, take used motor oil thinned with kerosene, and liberally spray the underside of their plow trucks, inside the doors, under the fenders, etc.

They swear by it. But, it makes a mess and is definitely not 'green'

Of course none of the above or other rust proofing will help once a car has started to rust.

One of the old tricks to combat rust in old FIATs, or so I read in an old copy of R&T, was to take dust from a vacuum cleaner bad, mix it with fresh motor oil and smear it inside the door panels. Another friend who owned a 356 porsche from new, and drove it through many Canadian winters, was to take heavy grease, and smear the inside of the fenders, and pretty much everywhere else he could reach. He swears, the car never developed a spot of rust in the years he had it. The greenies would love such practices
today. hee hee.

There are many more 124s but the Alfa Duetto 1750 renamed/restyled
as the Graduate in the 80s is also an awesome car with unique
styling, 5 sp gearbox and unfortunatly their biggest problem is
rust. Other problems exist also, but IMO rust was #1. Find one
that has been repaired properly and you'll have a sound basis to
build on.

Same comments about the 124 and rust apply unfortunately - don't
know if the later Fiats started using galvanized sheetmetal or not.

IMO the who Upscaling phenomonom made the LBCs popular in the 1st
case - that and the open sky motoring of course.

Which brings me back to [1]Re: [Ferrari] FXX Evoluzione, I would
love
to own one but doubt that I could ever drive it even on the
track....I
am starting to think Fiat all over again, buy a 124 / 2000
spyder for
very little learn the car from one end to the other...bring it
back
and enjoy it. And, probably have less invested in it than a
major on
 most F cars...but, I do love those F cars.

I began to think about the scale of sports cars. And
specifically, I compared the two kinds of sports cars that I
enjoy: Ferraris and >LBCs (Little British Cars). I have
said before that the 'thrill factor' of motoring is scale
dependent, thus the connection to the previous >tutorial on
sampling. One might argue that the same 'thrill-factor'
achieved at 90mph in a Ferrari on an open winding highway,
might
be >found in a 40mph run in an LBC on a twisty country
road. See the scale thing? And I think this might
just explain why I enjoy driving >LBCs and don't drive my
Ferraris much at all. I can thrash an LBC to its absolute
limits and rarely exceed the speed limit! I can break >the
speed limit in 1st gear in either of my F-cars! The
translation is that because of the laws, I have to grossly
under-
use my F-cars >thereby depriving me of the 'thrill-factor'.

That is sooo true, Rick ! I think exactly the same thing every
time I
take my MGA for a ride. The fun factor at much lower speeds is
 great.
And I have to add that thoughts of broken cam belts, bent
valves and
other natural disasters do NOT cross my mind :-)

Notice how appearance, sound, pride, etc., have not figured
into this argument; only 'thrill-factor' induced by spirited
driving. Would I >rather have a Ferrari than an MG?
Obviously yes. But given a twisty little country road, I
can tell you which one I would rather drive, >and it isn't
Italian.

Oh yes, absolutely!
Don't get me wrong, I love my 328 and plan to keep it forever
if the
economy allows. After all, I've dreamed about it for 29 years,
and it
puts a smile on my face every time I get home and look at it,
every
time I start it and everytime I drive it!
But it does have a usage/maintenance hours ratio < 1 so far
...

PS: Posts like this are the reason we just can't wait for
the
F1 season to start! :-)

How I understand you ...

Rui
