Re: NFC: Afraid to ask... Catalina Island

Thanks Bruce. Great pics. I know what I'm looking forward to now. Since I
haven't seen many of my cousins in years, I'm going to try and squeeze as much
of Catalina in a day with Mom and spend the rest of my weekend on the mainland
with them. There doesn't seem much to be going on during this weekend plus
it's with "Mom". She can't dance as well as she used to since she had knee
surgery, so it frustrates me to hear music and "stand" there. A few years ago,
there was an annual swing dance event. I never had a chance to go to that
which is why I want to see Catalina now that I have the chance. Besides week
long workshops and dancing parties of hundreds of dancers, "Swing" lived up to
its name... Mom blames the dance scene here in Chicago for me holding off on
getting remarried and giving her grandchildren.

Is it too cold this time of year for snorkeling? If the weather is good, Mom
wants to kayak too.

I grew up in Long Beach, and have been to Catalina many times. My wife's
sister lived in Avalon for several years.
Winter there is pretty quiet, but they do have busy weekends for events
like the Catalina Marathon, so check ahead
and get reservations. Many places want you to book 2 nights minimum for
the weekend. You can catch a ferry from
either LB or San Pedro. Boats leave many times per day, but definitely
get reservations ahead of time.

Lots of touristy things to do. Submarine ride, glass bottom boat,
Descanso Beach has kayaks to rent, Casino point dive park (great
for scuba diving and snorkling -- world class), interior bus tour up to
the airport -- see the buffalo, golf, walk up to
the botanical gardens and Wrigley Memorial, rent a golf cart and drive
around or pay $2 for the shuttle bus.
You can do most of Avalon in a day. If there is a cruise ship in port,
there will be crowds at the shops along the Cresent.

We had a mini vacation there this summer. Pictures here:
