Up until recently I would have laughed at the idea of a Mac...Today my Home Theater Rig is an XP box (home built). (Need to convert it to an Ubuntu Myth box one of these days)
My Gaming rig/main desktop is also an XP box (home built). My Home PC/kids PC is an XP box.My work laptop (which I no longer use other than for a server to some special hardware) is XP. My wife's work laptop is a MacBook OSX 10.5.6 I have a Toshiba Tablet PC that I used a while back that has Vista on it now, used to be XP Tablet edition.
The machine I use the most lately is my Mac Book Pro with OSX 10.5.6 and Parallels (VM) to boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.10. So far its been very solid, and honestly the only way to run any Windows version is under a VM in a stable OS with every half hour backups :)
My take on Vista so far is that it is a nicer UI, with some annoying security additions, and is entirely designed to make you go out and by the latest intel i7 processor to cope with it... Side to side XP and Vista are either a dead heat or XP is just faster by a decent margin. My recommendations is for serious computing needs (actually doing some math and saving some results), nothing does the job as well as Linux, and nothing has the broad application support like XP.
Vista is like an Odd numbered Star Trek Movie... You'll watch it once, but will not remember it like the even number ones (which makes me wonder why the next Windows is being called Windows 7?)...
I suppose Star Trek does not apply to everything... Steve Jenkins wrote:
You're all on crack! :) My house domain controller is Win2K. My desktop is Vista. My wife's desktop is Vista. My assistant's desktop is XP. The kids' computer is XP, locked down with Family Safety Services (http://fss.live.com) My kitchen computer is Mac OSX. My personal laptop is Mac OSX. My wife's personal laptop is Ubuntu 8.10. My first backup server is RedHat Linux 9. My second backup server is Fedora 10. My personal web/database/mail server is RedHat Linux 9. My company's servers are RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 & RedHat Enterprise Linux 4. Platform agnosticism is the way to go! But I do find myself stealing my wife's laptop quite often. I may have to admit that Ubuntu is the best desktop... SJ P.S. I'm cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs(TM)! -----Original Message-----From: Robert W.
