IIRC, the PDK was used (and perfected for racing) in a 956/962 back in th
80s where it won a major endurance race - can't remember any other details
but remember seeing a article in Christo and Excellence. Seems like the
drivers enoyed it IIRC -

Actually Porsche had an F1 style trans (a clutch/flywheel equipped vehicle that required no shift lever) back in the 70's but only used them in racing applications. The reason the Tiptronic (electronically controlled auto) has been around so long is that Porsche could never get the original F1 style smooth enough for street use. But they finallyhave the PDK out now and it is showing to be a superb piece of engineering!B Michael James wrote:Eh, everyone is 'in-love' with paddle-shift on the column now, it was only a matter of time before Porsche realized that F1-equipped Ferraris were whipping Porsche street cars through the gears regularly. P had to copy F as a matter of pride/business or lose market-share to the 'faster' car. Ferrari's system appears to be superior in shift-speed and development. Anyone who says different can please show me the Porsche-designed Formula 1 car with paddleshifts.....But I'm also to understand that Lambo, F and P 'semi-auto' trannies all have a 'full-auto' mode as well, where the car requires no shifting input from the driver whatsoever and essentially operates like my Grandfather's Buick. This is why we now have the Nu-Money, Paris Hiltons of the world bipping around Hollywood in Italy's latest when just ten years ago none of these tools knew how to drive these cars.....progress ain't always a 'good' thing, no?M--- On Wed, 3/11/09, Fellippe Galletta <fellippe.galletta [at] gmail.com> wrote:From: Fellippe Galletta <fellippe.galletta [at] gmail.com> Subject: Re: [Ferrari] NFC: Comparing manual to auto trans on race track To: "Michael" <Cavallino_Rapante [at] yahoo.com> Cc: "The FerrariList" <ferrari [at] ferrarilist.com> Date: Wednesday, March 11, 2009, 1:55 AM On Wed, Mar 11, 2009 at 1:53 AM, Michael James <cavallino_rapante [at] yahoo.com>wrote:I think the article might be misleading because the Tiptronic transmission,I recall, required a semi-auto engagement of 'up' or 'down' via the gearlever on the floor/console. This required the driver to remove their hand from the wheel to shift, losing driver focus to fumble with a narrow-gated lever out of the field of view. It is/was almost as bad as Ferrari's Valeo system - we all know how successful THAT was.I also recall the driver not having full-use of the rev range of the enginewith the Tiptronic tranny, when the revs reached a certain value, the car up/down shifted automatically regardless of driver intent as a matter of preservation, so taking the car to max-revs before shiftingwasn't possible. I never saw a Tip-equipped Porsche do well on the re-sale market, and everything I've read or heard about them from owners said 'shitebox'....YMMV. MMike, I'm with you on the hating of the porsche tiptronic and semi-autos in general....but the amount of new 911 turbos sold with this "PDK" transmission is staggering. I think it's something like 30-40%....a lot of people have them.
