Rick,

What I've been told and do:

Run gas tank down to 1/4 (allows higher concentration)
Put in a bottle of Techron
Drive around hard (Italian Tune-up) until near empty
Fill up tank
Change the oil

You will get crap coming out of the exhaust.  I'm told this super concentration 
really gets everything clean.  Definitely change the oil afterward.  

Want to get even more serious:

Before changing oil, pick up Gunk engine flush and follow directions.

I usually perform two oil changes.  First one with a cheap oil to remove any 
left over chemicals and immediately follow up with synthetic.  I do it every 
50k or on a newly purchased used cars.  I found this works very well and very 
noticeable.  YMMV
