Speaking of Colonel Harlan Sanders, I helped cover the Rose Bowl back in the '70s, the year that he was Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade. And who should be sitting next to me in the Pressbox but the Colonel. White suit, string tie and all. He was a really nice guy, and asked me some questions about both USC and Ohio State, who were playing that day. Being the ultimate newspaper free-loader that I was, I was disappointed he didn't give me one of his cards that said I would get a lifetime 10% discount. Cheap bastard! Another nice guy that I sat next to at the 1965 World Series was Bill Veck (as in wreck.) One of the all time baseball legends. But on the other side of the coin was when Howard Cosell and the MNFB broadcast crew came into L.A. to do a Monday night game and we had dinner with them at Lawry's The Prime Rib in Hollywood. Talk about your insufferable assholes! Mr 'I wrote the book, and I know it all!' And the more he drank, the more loud and?obnoxious he got. Dandy Don and Frank Gifford couldn't get a word in edgewise. Looking back, it was funny, but if you had to sit thru an hour of it, it was like having your fingernails ripped out, one at a time. Ach, the memories, yer pal, Ferrari Bubba -----Original Message----- From: Misc Subject: RE: [Ferrari] Beknightment Not a knight, but I did get the lovely opportunity to hang out with Col Sanders niece(probably 24 at the time, and beautiful!!) at the Kentucky Colonels BBQ after the Derby. I will never forget this lovely lady looking me in the eye and(in a wonderful southern drawl) saying "Mark, why don't we mosey over to the shade and talk for a while". I would have crawled to that shade....... Good times at the Derby! I got my pin?the year that I went to the Derby and got sick from more than a few too many mint julips. I don't know whether it was the julips or the poorly aimed urine stream, but I ruined my new pair of ostrich skin cowboy boots that bright, hot, May day. <g> Yer (sober now) pal, Ferrari Bubba -----Original Message----- From: phil Subject: [Ferrari] Beknightment On this dayWednesday March 25th 2009, It is with great pleasure that I bestow the title of Knight of the list on our great friend Rick Lindsay, henceforth he will be known as Sir Cooter.
