There a north facing area of my driveway that receives snow melt water
from a roof that would freeze and cause a problem. I priced commercially
available melting mats and could not believe how expensive they were. So
2 years ago I installed a 1300' "snake" of 16 gauge polyethylene
insulated, UF single conductor, direct burial cable (typically used to
control golf course irrigation systems) on 2" centers between the base
blacktop coat and the top coat. It's connected to a 40 amp 240v circuit
to deliver about 65 watts per sq. ft.. Works like a charm.

Am getting estimates to repave my driveway, and spouse is interested in having a relatively flat portion heated in order to avoid ice buildup if it is not pitched perfectly. If anyone has any experience with heating driveways, and/or rough cost date, I would appreciate hearing from them privately.
