Hmmm - Hey Bubba - thanks for helping me with the details. I had some details
right but the drivers wrong. Once again I'm working from the memory of
reading an article about the Targa and Fangio was so consistant and perfect in
his driving that on every lap his wheel cover would kiss the curb at the same
place every lap (IIRC the Targa is 5 laps?) Anyway, I'm sure it was Fangio and
the part about touching the curb on each lap - I was more impressed with the
details of his driving perfection than the location. ;-) sorry.

Take care --
LarryT

  1956 - Fangio, driving a Lancia-Ferrari D-50 broke down mid-race at Monza. He
needed to finish in the points to win the WDC.

Under factory orders Luigi Musso was ordered in to hand his car over to
Fangio, but Musso ignored the black flag and kept on going. (He was Italian and
this was his home GP.) Peter Collins, driving a similar car saw what was going
on, and on his own, pulled in and gave up his car to Fangio, who was nervously
pacing the Ferrari pits. Fangio went on to score enough points to win the
championship.

Maybe cLyDe can fill us in with all the details.

There is some arguement as to whether Collins, if he had not given the car to
Juan Fangio, would have had enough points to win the championship, but I do
remember that Collins won the Belgian race at Spa earlier.

When asked why he pulled in and gave up his car, Peter said that "I'm young
and will have a lifetime to be World Champion, but 'The Old Man' only has a few
more years left." Collins was killed less than two years later, driving his
Dino 246 F1 car on the 'Ring in the German GP.

Oh, BTW, later in the race, Musso shredded one of his Englebert tires on the
banking and crashed. It was said that he cried like a little girl, he was so
disappointed.

Kinda like Mikka did 50 years later. <g>

  Yer pal, Ferrari Bubba

Lash, ... Dude! Congrats (first of all & most importantly) -

Also - you wrote <<stupid F1 rules caused me to doubt >> you should go
back and read some of the race reports from the 50s and 60s! In one F1 race
Fangio's car broke. He needed to finish well to win the championship.
Naturally one S Moss ( a driver of some repute) came into the pits and gave
Fangio his car! I may be wrong, but I think Moss may have won the
championship had he kept driving and not given up his ride.

There are gentlemen and then there are *Special* gentlemen. It was a
different time. Of course, I may be remembering it wrong and Moss may have
only finished 2nd - still it was a spectacular way to conduct himself.

Yep, I do call them the Good ol Days,
Larry

Your reply illustrates why F1 sucks so bad today. There could never be a P34
type vehicle ever with Bernie in place.

I was reading a section of Mark Donohue's Unfair Advantage last night while
flying home from San Francisco. There was a description of how he broke an
engine in the Porsche 917-30 during one of the early weekend heats of a Can
Am race. His mechanics scrambled and took the motor out of the spare car and
put it into the race car. I immediately thumbed through the prior pages and
my notes to confirm that it was a legal move for 1973. Of course it was!!!

Only my recent acquaintance with stupid F1 rules caused me to doubt it in
the first place...so lame!

Shortly after, my wife, who was seated next to me picked up the book and
started reading the captions about the 917-10 and 30. She asked me what "Can
Am" was and what the rules were...I explained the rules to her in seven
words.

What has the world come to?

LS

Nah, no Tyrrell. It takes too long to change all those
tires.....................
