I'll give you the best way to the west coast, 5 - 6 days is  
reasonable as you are talking 3000 miles/48 hours in the saddle. Even  
the Cannonball Run guys took about 33 hrs driving time.

I highly recommend you go southerly as the roads are so much better.  
Swing around DC through Allentown and Harrisburg. Then run 81 down  
through VA to Knoxville and take 40 across. The Interstate is much  
better maintained through TN/AR and the great state of Texas. On  
through New Mexico, Flagstaff Arizona (don't forget Winona) and soon  
you are able to swing over to Bakersfield, across to San Luis Obispo  
and up the PCH to Monterey. The route is spectacular the whole damn way.

Notes:

1. You have to lose your radar detectors while crossing VA. You will  
be paralleling the Skyline Drive but it is very slow and it is high  
tourist season. Everything from TN onwards is posted 70. parts of TX  
are posted 80 but not your route.
2. It's all very scenic. TN is very pretty. Stop in Memphis at  
Corky's Ribs & BBQ - just off the bypass. Opens at 11. Worth the  
trouble.
3. Amarillo is a great place to overnight, since after that there's  
not much until ABQ. Avoid the Big Texan Steak House - muy touirsta.  
Go to the Stockman's Restaurant at the stockyards. That's where the  
ranchers eat. Me too. Pulling out of Amarillo heading west about half  
a mile out of town is the Cadillac ranch on the eastbound southern  
side. A must stop and take picture place. You'll see it easily.
4. Don't go through ABQ You have time to detour through Santa Fe and  
spend a night there. I can give you explicit routes and instructions  
if you choose this. Just do it. Better than Monterey. Roads are  
fabulous.
5. Grand Canyon - plan on spending many hours getting in and out,  
it's WAY off the highway. I would NOT go to Las Vegas unless you are  
happy doubling back. through Barstow or going all the way up to Reno  
and across (400 miles). There are impassable mountains and Death  
Valley between LV and the CA coast.
6. From Bakersfield take 56 through Simmler to San Luis Obispo and  
Morro Bay. This will be your best drive of the trip. Now my secret is  
out (snif). Overnight in Morro Bay. Reserve now. Then go up through  
Big Sur to Monterey. GO EARLY IN SUMMER. Leave 20 minutes before  
sunup. If you don't you will be following an RV the whole way. Slow  
to 15. Now Slow to 10. Arrrrgggghhhhhh!
