Well Hans, ol Jim may have used the turbo 400s at one time or another - Lordy - they used everything else - AND under the nose of GM brass. Sorta their own private Skunk Works known only to a few people. However, the mainstay, and their undoing, was the Powerglide. Their undoing was the size of the torque converter - couldn't get it any smaller than 10 inches which inhibited them from lowering the engine and the cars center of gravity. McLaren on the other hand had the big 500+ ci al engine block on the ground.

I recall one practice session at Riverside Int Raceway during the Times GP or CanAm as it was known. Phil Hill was the co-driver for a few races in the super secret automatic tranny racecar. Seems Phil's car caught fire and he scuttled over to the side of the track up by turn one in a hurry, popped out of the car (fire was out - oil file?) and was on his knees looking under the car. Up comes big Jim Hall and in his ever fine Texas drawl - sez "Ah'm payin' you to drive this car - - - NOT look under it."
Ahh, the good ol' dayze.

It was my understanding that Jim Hall used pre-production prototypes of
the Turbo 400 - ie: he help in their development.

Hans.
