After a 15 year life of short (3-4 mi to work) drives my MB 300D's engine
cleaned up great with exactly the kind of driving style you suggest - long,
fast high speed trips. When we bought it we found the heads were choked
with carbon - after 2-3 months of my wife driving 50+ miles each way on the
Interstate 99% of the time at 65-70 mph. Its now like a new engine.
Of course, each MB is different and some of us don't buy new so we're stuck with whatever treatment our "new to us" MB might have received. That's the key - finding a MB that's been cared for with in reason - at least such it can be brought back to life for a reasonable amount of money.

I'll bet my lunch money that running those MB on those long open roads in West Texas at high (legal) speeds has more than a little to do with the lack of problems. In this case I would like to share our M/B experiences. Our first MB was a 1991 300E. Great ride, handling, fuel economy and very little maintenance. Sold it to my cousin after 5 years with 110,000 miles and he is still driving it. Next was a 1998 E320 sedan; it has 87,000 miles on it now and my wife still drives it. I have a 2000 E320 wagon that now has 127,000 miles on it. Again, great ride, handling, fuel economy and very little maintenance. Both get around 20/30 mpg. We are both retired traveling sales reps used to driving long distances. I am also retired from 10 years of SCCA auto crossing in an MG and a couple of Corvettes. No other car feels as good or as safe to us as a MB. I want to be in my tank with lots of air bags when some clown plows into us. My wife had a BMW Z3 for 3 years and I drove the 1998 sedan. When she got tired of it she wanted her car back and that's when I got my wagon. Nothing else compares to MB. We have looked at a 2004 E320 and a 2006 E320 CDI since. Both were great and would have considered buying either one, but just decided to stay with the ones we have. Also, recently looked at new Fords, Chevrolets, and Chryslers; in a word: BORING. Nice cars, but when I drive them I quickly forget what car I am in, it just fades into the background. I have to read the steering wheel to see what I'm driving. There is a local independent mechanic that knows what he is doing and will install parts I buy at reasonable prices on the internet. Never had a problem driving in the inch or 2 of snow we get here in west Texas. So, well stick with our MBs and my 78 308 and 01 Corvette; everybody should buy what makes them smile. Just my opinion. Merry Christmas.
