Write "payment in full" and the VIN on the note section of the check.

Yeah I know but i was referring to the idea of leaving a cheque and waling out the door and saying "call me if you want to cash it". In that case you don't have a bill of sale. I like the idea but was wondering about the safety net.

Britt:

When you're working with a dealer, a Sales Order is filled out,
specifying the vehicle and all the terms. There is no
ambiguity, and both parties are protected legally.

I fully believe in Ken pricing but what would happen if the dealer took
your check, deposited it, and then claimed it was a down payment for the
car
or a substantial deposit? I would worry about a scum bag dealer (over
here
in the UK at least) taking the money but still asking for more. It
would/could be a real hassle to get your money back..

Am I alone in wondering this? With a private seller I would never pay
without having the car papers in my hand the second I handed over the
money.
Lots of things can disappear from a car if you buy it and don't take it
with
you...books, car cover, tools, receipts, ect.

Maybe I am just less trust worthy than you guys. If I screw the price
down
(which I do) I don't want to leave the car with the vendor for one second
because if they feel they didn't get as much as they wanted they might
try
to make the money back some other way.

Thoughts?
