Hi Gang -

First, thanks to all who offered suggestions.  I am running only Ethernet now.  My Router is new as is par of the cabling (the easy part) - also tried a different laptop.

 

My LAN consists of my Desktop which is the base and has the Cable Modem and Router attached, then the laptop in the BR which is where I have the problems.   The desktop seems to never have problems.  But I've tried other laptops and he problem persists in the bedroom.  That's why I changed the router.  I don?t really want to but it seems changing the rest of the ethernet cable might be my next move.

 

Does that make sense?

Larry,
This is my area of expertise.  I have been in the data networking biz for about 25 years.  One thing I have seen at my place is that with wireless, sometimes our connections are with one of the neighbors access points.  When this happens we have marginal service.  So it would be beneficial that you are connecting to the wireless access point that you think you are connecting to.  You can usually tell by either clicking on or hovering over the wireless icon in the lower right-hand corner of the Windows tray.  If you are on a Mac, click on the wireless icon at the top and it should list your connection.  You could also have problems that would show the same symptoms if you have more than one wireless application, also called supplicant.  This is the low-level program that controls your wireless card and wireless configuration.  Sometimes if multiple cards have been installed, these programs conflict with each other.  The best way to deal with it is to make sure they are all disabled except the one you want to use.  Or, uninstall all of the programs other than the one you want to use.

If the problem occurs when you are Ethernet only, wireless disabled, then the problem is most like between your computer and your ISP.  It could be your router or it could be the connection beyond the router.

I've already done all the things they usually suggest (SOP) they are lost. 
Then they schedule a house visit.

I also have ConfigFree - a Toshiba program that assists making connections. 
It's mostly useless though.

Any ideas?
