Fellippe,
In my case, after
carrying every time I leave the house (almost) for nearly 10 years, I have never
gotten "used" to it. To me, it's *special* every time I slide it into my
holster and leave the house. Also, I try to consider what I'm putting on
my hip each time - the power to protect but also to destroy. And I have
resolved in my own mind never to pull it or expose it (I'm talking about the
handgun) unless I'm prepared to use it.
Some of you may think
that's a bunch of hooey, but stats will prove that CCW holders are a very
cautious bunch. Actually gun owners in general are pretty safe, the
criminal element and stupid accidents get all the media and it distorts the
picture about guns.
Some background:
In Texas, which has 215,582 licensees, only 178 people have lost their
permits due to felony convictions since 1996. Only three have gone to jail for
murder or attempted murder. Florida, one of the first states to embark on this
experiment, issued more than 72,000 licenses in the past year, while revoking
only 241.
Indiana, which has about 350,000 permit holders, canceled 921 last year, or
about one-fourth of 1 percent of the total. Maj. Karen Butts, commander of the
records division of the state police, says, "I can't think of any that were
revoked for a firearms homicide." Among Utah's 40,000 licensees, only five have
lost their privileges because of a conviction for murder or attempted
murder. And, "There has never been a case where a person with a
permitted concealed handgun has killed a police officer."
If you'll run any of these numbers on your handy
calculator you'll find the %'s are extremely small - usually less than 1/4
of %. These kinds of %'s are common for all CCW holders in the
36 states -?- that have "shall" issue laws.
Anyway - There also must be some concern about
getting into a situation where the gun might not help - I'm told a man with a
knife 20' away can cross the distance before a gun can be drawn. Wouldn't
want to test that comment. While I always am aware I'm carrying, I am also
aware of where I am and whether I'm in a location that's safe and defensible
while being aware of who is around me.
Your final question <<If you're not 110% committed to following through or sure
of yourself, this could be a problem for the CCW carrier,
no?>>
That's why it's important to practice - which is
not just shooting at paper, but "thinking" about what things might happen and
how best to react. Just like I read lots of sports car magazines to
learn more, I also read as much as I can about using a handgun for
protection.
I know, no one wants a long gun thread (or a
short one) -- if you have more questions, perhaps just send it right to
me?
Hope you're all having a nice weekend -
\

You bring up an interesting question of mine... When one has a CCW, doesn't it change your mindframe at all times? At first you think it gives a jolt of confidence that you will be alright in many scary situations, but the one thing that bothers me is that some people I know carry all the time. At some point, you are as used to carrying a gun as you are a cellphone. Now if something totally out of the random comes up, you have to react and be willing to use the weapon. If you point it you now mean business, and the "enemy" now means as much or more business than you did before you drew. If you're not 110% committed to following through or sure of yourself, this could be a problem for the CCW carrier, no? FG
