I took a class at a local college.

!. I would use R12 it is still available and works best. I have heard there are some hybrid gases but im not impressed.

2. the 308 system is pretty solid. if you dont have leaks the system still requires fill up every couple of years the WSM calls for yearly top off.

3. Dryers are available, you can take your compressor off and have it checked

4. Replace your dryer, have the system vacuumed to check for leaks, then refill. The 308 system really wont cool your car in hot weather but works fine when
its about 75! :-)  I try to keep it going just for historical sake. If I was less anal I would take it off, but refuse to mess with the car ....

1981 308 GTSi: I've had my 308 for 9 years and never used the A/C because it's not working. 2 years ago my mechanic told me the freom was empty.
But something else might be broken too. I have decided to do something about it. I have an appointment for next monday.
Here are my questions:
1- How much is a used working A/C system (everything included) worth ?
I'm thinking of taking everything off and sell it on Ebay. Without the A/C my radiator should get more cool air too.

If he tells me the cost of fixing it is too high for me, because I know I won't use it that often anyway, I'll probably sell the A/C.
2- Should I ask him to take everything off ?
If I do so, am I wasting my money ? Comparing the cost of paying a mechanic to take the whole system off with the money I'll get from selling it !!!!!!

3- Is this something I could do myself ? It looks pretty easy.  Has anybody done it and how is it done ?

Thank you!
