Did you buy a car that has paddle shifters?

Does your car feature an auto-park mode?

If not you don't qualify as a typical new Ferrari buyer.  Congratulations and please head to your nearest Porsche dealer, who still put a manual in every model (except the abomination)...

I take exception to 'for old men who can't shift or parallel park'. I believe it's the young that can't shift or parallel park.

My 3 grandsons can't shift nor do thay want to learn. Heck, even Daniel Craig can't drive a stick.

So my insurance rates should drop, beacause the number of potential thiefs of my stick shift cars are on the decline.:-)

Agree - the article makes a weak attempt to tie youth driver-ed/apathy to the decline of the clutch pedal.  That link isn't there, sorry.  There are LOTS of other factors going-on to discuss why only 30% of 16 year olds have a DL.  Anyone price auto insurance lately for a 16 year old?  Or the average car price has climbed to well-north of $23K?  Or highway fatality statistics regarding deaths in that age group?  Or the economy/jobs situation?

The basic premise I agree with, however.  The manual is in decline - we'll all be driving paddle-shifters in the future, but they DO help you get around the racetrack faster.  Drivers/Customers will have to decide which is more important - a clutch pedal, or shifts that happen in microseconds.

OK

I am all for this clearly, but when I read the article suggesting 30% of 16 year olds are getting their licenses and the rest think driving is lame...

Not sure what to make of that?  On the one hand I am happy there will be fewer drivers out there crowding the roads, on the other hand these kids will eventually be living in Mom and Dad's basement since they lack the mobility, on the other hand they will eventually learn to drive much later in life, so even less experienced drivers, on the other hand if they did that, then they likely would not go through "driver's ed" and would have gotten a real instructor and lessons, making them overall better drivers...

But really how dare Ferrari...  When I think about it really.  This is a company that used to make sports cars, now they make very fast cars for old men who can't shift or parallel park.  They have become the gold chain standard with this move to elecro-fit every vehicle such that all you need to do to go fast is mash the pedal and steer...  I read something like 6% of lamborghini's being sold last year had a manual also...  If I wanted that I'd use my PS3 controller and lean in my chair a lot.  What a sad testament to driving overall.

Sad sad sad.  I was at Lake Forest Sports cars this week for a car club meeting.  They had a lot of very pretty cars, including an SLR and an MC12.  The only new cars there that you could row your own in were the Lotus's...  AM's? nope, Maserati's?  nope, Ferrari's?  nope, not a one had 3 pedals on the floor.  Not one.  If you wanted that, you would have to purchase a used vehicle.  And they had 4 new Scuderia's on the floor, gray, white, black and red...   The nicest F car they had was an older 512 TR, that thing was beautiful, and they had a 246 Dino also that was very nice.

BR,
Mike

I wouldn't say it makes the car more economic on Gas as the engine size and how you floor the pedals to get that adrenaline rush is what its all about my friends! Here Here on Manuals!!!!!!!!
