Chrome or painted wheels? One of the only cars that "I think" [see - a
personal thing] which seems to wear chrome wheels well is a 1963,4,or 5
Porsche 356 or the 912. VW offered their two piece steel wheels in place of
the their two tone steel wheel sets in the mid 60's as an option. Didn't
hang in there. Too much $?
Early early pre-A 16" Porsche wheels must be two tone or all black and later ones must be Ferrari / Wurth / MB silver. An exception were the Rudge knock offs - either for Porsche or MB.
The early 911's and 912's can wear either silver (mostly the 911's little 4 cyl 912 brother tho) or chrome two piece steel wheels. Later 911's - 1967 or '8 can wear the newer cast or forged wheels in the stock dipped silver anodized and satin black centers. After that, the 5 petal forged Fuchs wheel becomes a quintessential addition on anything LWB - long hood (1969) on up.
In the early '70's Porsche tried painting the Fuchs forged 5 petal wheel centers the same color as the car but it was too personal and volume wasn't there.
By the mid 80's - the general Porsche body design supported anything and anything was offered - even chrome plated.
One nice thing about chrome wheels - they seem to clean up better.Just my personal opinion - not just on clean up - the whole treatise. I could be wrong. heh heh
