All I know about the French (legal system) if you are accussed , then your 
guilty until you prove your self innocent.
Kind of like out traffic laws here.

If you want to split hairs, France's legal system is based on old
Roman law (civil) as opposed to the common law system that is goes
back to 1066. As a result, you don't get the same adversarial (or
sporting) confrontations in the courts there that we're used to.
Pretty hard to advocate your own point when the judge is the one
driving the investigation for the truth.
