Yes, I agree the modern models are often just as fast, but that's true of all cars.  What was ground breaking 25 years ago, finds its way into more mass produced models, as did the 4 wheel drive system, twin turbos, and other features on the 959.  I'm quite sure, a new out of the box 458 could mop the floor with a 288 GTO.  The new car is also most likely better built, more comfortable, and while more powerful, probably much more usable everywhere in the rev range.  The current entry level Ferrari is now nipping at the tail of what was the companies flagship supercar only a few years ago.

A friend of mine had the chance to spend some time with a 959 over in Germany on the Autobahn.  He said it was the most stable car he had ever driven.  He was amazed to look at the speedo, and see that he was doing 175 mph, in the rain.  As usable as a 911 Carrera, and "almost" as fast as an F40.  What a package!  :-)

The praise for the 959 is worthy I guess, but what worries me is that a modern 911 turbo is probably just as raw...and faster.

All that's left is the exotic looks of the 959...

I dunno, it's a cool car but a tough sell for the money.

Now the 288 on the other hand......that car will be a legend forever.
