We have all developed soft rules for our car ownershop practice - what works best for our budget and needs.

Some buy new, hold car about 3 years (lease), then sale/trade-in/move it to second car status
Some may buy a used 5 year car, hold another 5 years before disposing.
Some will buy used at about 5 years, hold 10-20 or more years (forever).

Quick post, 3 numbers showing the 'soft rules' expressing the buy/sell years at recent car purchases.
Age at Purchase, Age at Separation,

1, 35
5,12

It would be interesting to see the variation in auto purchase habits and perhaps provide a suggestion for change. It would also be interesting to note what event triggers the process, like my wife saying 'I don't trust this car anymore'.
