I remember having a good look at an old Renault F1 engine once.  I think they were making 1200+ out of 1.5 litres.  It amazes me that an engine of that size and displacement, subjected to the tortures of a F1 race, could go 2 hours!

I'm not sure how the economy of scale works into all the new regulations.  If you spend $10-150 million developing an engine package, I'm not sure how building 4 engines, rather than 8 or 25 engines is a way to save any real money.  The serious money has already been spent.  To me, a lot more money could be saved by just freezing the build rules for several years, on both the chassis and engines.  Teams would be free to improve their designs over the freeze period, within the original rules.  But rewriting the rules just sends everybody back to the drawing board and a blank page, while reaching for their chequebooks.

While racing improves the breed, I personally feel very little at this level of racing filters down to road cars, and when it does, it's often more of a novelty than anything that is usable or even noticeable in the real world.

Ferrari had 6cyl 1.5 liter tubocharged as well. Plus there were qualifying
engines and tires. back in those days teams were lucky if the engines
finished 1 race.
