The wiggle test, found in Ford diagnostic manuals, is a valid test - just don't do it on a running distributor.
Likewise testing and sniping the ends of old vacuum hose is valid.I found a vacuum brake booster's 17 mm hose with engine end buried under a greasy air cleaner had "crystallized" - Hard as a rock. What's more - a one inch long by 1/2 inch arch chunk UNDER at the hose end was just hanging by threads. How it ever ran is sheer guess work.
