Read the U-Tube end of the Lambo.  A few days / weeks / months? earlier he hit 251. 

 

Then, on his last run, with parachutes, he hit 235, pulled the chutes, got out of shape and did endo's.  I mean front - rear - front - rear etc.  He walked from it.

 

My absolute uneducated guess - parachutes tied too low to the car.  Once the chutes fully blossomed - the chutes picked the rear of the car off the ground.  Then all the poor driver had was wheel barrow and he was the passenger.  Ka-BOOM rattle BOOM rattle and so on.

Many years ago, Car & Driver used to use a 5 mile strip for

top speed runs.  Not all was acceleration, as they had to

bring the machines to a stop, plus leave some extra for

a safety margin.  They referred to their test site as "Mrs.

Orcutt's Driveway", as it was a private road.

 

I haven't subscribed in years, so I don't know if this piece

of asphalt is still what they use.  But the bottom line is that

1 mile is no where near enough to establish top speed.

FWIW, the ZR1 Corvette does about 178 in the mile, but

with an ultimate top speed somewhere a bit north of 210.

The Viper did 173 in a recent test.  It was still accelerating,

but top speed wasn't measured.
