I kind of agree with you, that the race should
be won on the track, by the car and driver.
But in recent years there have been few passes on
the track for the leed, maybe if pitstops were eleminated there were be
more.
If the field was inverted by qualifying you
would end up with wholesale sandbaging.
What if the first race of the season was set by the
inversion of last years standings, all races after the 1st race would be set by
the inversion of the previous race.
That should create more passing on the track, of
course to make Friday and Saturday interesting they should be given
points
for qualifying well, but still take positon on the
starting grid depending on the previous race finish inverted.

Tires, I get as sticky as I can and they get a
about 10k miles on them. I would think with the exception of rain tires running
on a dry track you could make them last 200 miles.

But if you have to have a pit crew to change the
rubber for weather it would be an expense and a waste at most
venues.

But we can't change anything, and I still enjoy
Steve M pointing out a wheel nut missed or rolling around and a quick wheel man
having a spare.

Some thoughts...
How about a race with no pit
stops?  They want to control costs of F1?  Heck you just reduced
your headcount by a factor of 3 or 4.  Plus cost of moving all that extra
  rubber and fuel :)
Seriously as a part time racer, I would love if the
tire companies focussed on making race tires that can go the distance and
still perform like they are glued to the pavement :)  Pit stops?
bleh, talk about the least interesting way to win a race... Oh we changed
tires .4 seconds faster and won the race...  oooh aren't we
clever...  It lets drivers be less aggressive if they think they can wait
till a pit stop and beat an opponent by timing a pit stop rather than actually
  passing them on the track.
Sorry that isn't racing.  Pit stops
  suck.

They don't. Short tire life intervals contribute to the
entertainment value. American Idol. Dancing with the Stars. NASCAR -
(racing in generic cars). Formula One - it's all a distracion for the
drooling masses while nations wane and banks fail and the politicians get
all the money. We are frogs in a cast iron pot and the water is beginning
      to bubble.
