I don't know the ideal distance between the fan.
My experience was/is with detroit pig iron (hot rods) and fans that pull the air through the rediator and usually the problem is not enough room and we had to shroud the fan to the radiator.

Since the 308 fans pushes the air and they are in the air flow (the condenser was there also - you indicate the condenser was limiting the air flow) I would see how it handles a static test (that is usually when my fans come on and we both have 81 308 GTSi's).  If it over heats with the fans on, then I would shut it down and back to the drawing board. Also this will give you a chance to make sure the fans come on and there are no leaks.

I have had my air out since Jan 2005, but did not remove the condenser.
Hope this give food for thought.

What's the ideal distance between the fans and the radiator ?
I've taken the condenser out (my post back in december was that it would help air flow considerably, plus I had never used the ac in 9 years, the condenser was really beaten up, lots and lots of flat blades) during the winter, cleaned the radiator and painted it, painted the frame around and under the radiator, etc.
After putting back the radiator, without the condenser, I noticed I can't push my fans in their brackets any closer than 1 1/2" to the radiator. The wires connecting the fan motors are at the back of the motors and are touching the edge of the brackets. So, I can't go any further. Even if I could I think the fan motors would fall off toward the radiator. With the condenser in, the fans were 1/8" close the condenser. Now without the condenser, I was able to push the fans toward the radiator, my guess is I gained 1/4", but they LOOK far even at 1 1/2".
Is that enough ?

Thank you!
