Paul,
I also went with a 12kw whole house unit similar to Scott Carpenter.
After years of annoying power loss in rural Mass. I went with the big automatic
unit after dealing with a smaller gasoline unit that my wife could never start
when I wasn't home.
Unfortunately the Auto Transfer Switch is a big ticket item in the
install. It does, however do ever thing automaticly and allows you to run a
computer/tv/etc. safely. Does the whole house including central air.
The bad news.... the total cost was $5k but I'm now glad I did it!
Still have all the paperwork on the install, if you need more info... feel free!
