For those of you looking into generators, the best way that I have seen to connect them is through a generator interlock kit. Square-D makes them for their panels. You can also check them out at http://www.interlockkit.com/. It allows you to run power to the entire panel and then select circuits as you need them (assuming tat your generator doesn't power the whole house). It eliminates the need for installing a sub-panel.
