That is stupid s an old band member. It is better to give away seats to make an event look full. It does 2 things. make people think it is more popular, so that is a public relations coup
2 make people want to pay next time if they had a good time. Plus it makes all sorts of goodwill and once again if you got free or cheap seats
you could afford a tshirt or food or both...........This makes no sense but neither does wings you can control on one straight........

Despite what Bob Varsha may have said during the Chinese GP broadcast, there were *PLENTY* of empty seats around us (Grandstand H, just before the last hairpin).  We heard from someone there (no telling if this is true or not....) that this race never sells out, the Chinese government subsidizes (for *whatever* reasons....) it to keep it going.  Regardless, what I said first I know for certain - there were *LOTS* of emtpy seats.
