Hi Adam,
Back before CNN (way back) in the revolutionary War
period, there were “Town Cryers” who would keep the locals up on the latest
news. He’d walk around town using a big, booming voice and would “Cry” out
the news. As he moved around he’d alert the locals he was beginning
his ‘broadcast’ by calling out “Hear, Hear”, as if to ask the people to hear
what he was about to tell them. At least that’s part of what I got from
American history class.
![]() I also seem to recall there being a “Town Cryer” walking
around doing his thing at Williamsburg last time we visited there.
