Hi Adam,

    Back before CNN (way back) in the revolutionary War period, there were âTown Cryersâ who would keep the locals up on the latest news.  Heâd walk around town using a big, booming voice and would âCryâ out the news.   As he moved around heâd alert the locals he was beginning his âbroadcastâ by calling out âHear, Hearâ, as if to ask the people to hear what he was about to tell them.  At least thatâs part of what I got from American history class. 

 

    I also seem to recall there being a âTown Cryerâ walking around doing his thing at Williamsburg last time we visited there.
