Hi Rob,

The reason you have leaks is not because of the oil.  It's because something wasn't assembled properly in your engine.  Irrespective for the grade or type of oil, if the engine doesn't have a hole in it, it won't leak.

It is not possible to judge an oil by perceived "Thinness" and it is a fact that oil can never be thin enough when you start an engine from cold.  As for high temperatures, how do you know its not protecting your engine?  Just because oil runs off the dipstick is not a test of its lubricating properties.

I have no idea why anyone would use a mineral based oil.  The advantages of synthetics have been documented for years.  Why don't you run your engine on synthetic and mineral based oils and then do an oil analysis to compare the two?  Only then will you have the information you need to make an informed decision.

You are drawing conclusions from data that is highly subjective, sorry!

Regards,

Carl.

Subject: [Ferrari] Oil Recommendation

All,

I ended up using redline 20/50 and unhappy with the leaks and thinness of the oil even at high temps. Not sure this is good for my engine. I am thinking of tryin to Valvoline VR1 20 50 which is a mineral based oil.

Is anyone using this. I have heard a 100 differing views but someone said since I change the oil every 6 months or 1000 miles whichever comes first anything would do. I am using Redline in my GB with great success but

it is 75/90.

This not about cost or availablity although the Valvoline is 1 block a way.  I looked at Brad Penn, Joe Gibbs, but the more I read the more I can not figure what to do.  The castrol 20/50 I was using doesnot have the amount of ZDDP

and several posts elsewhere showed castrol even admitting the oil would not be good for an older car with hard valvetrain????

When I pull my dipstick out the oil drips off like water. I cant see how this is protecting my engine.......

Rob
