Clyde – baby powder - good one.  I know its been used to detect wind leaks – but fuel leaks too?  Sounds like a try.

As far as pressurizing the system – a portion of the fuel system can be done, in fact its done for all California smog tests for cars MY 1995 and older.  Called LPFET – Low Pressure Fuel Evap Test.  1.5 pounds of N2 is introduced at fuel filler with a special cap and timed.  Any leak larger than .020 will fail a car.  This may also cause fuel in lines between fuel tank and carb bowl valving to blow out – and use of baby powder here may just do trick.

Good idea too since a hashed up fuel filler hose would definitely fail.  The diagnostics are pretty simple - - - - if you have the right tools and the right tool for THIS job is a smoke generator.  Once again, via the special fuel cap attach the smoke generator to it and within a few seconds – one can see smoke spewing from any leak.

As for statically pressurizing the fuel lines from fuel pump to carb bowls – gotta say it’s the same for FI as carbed cars – start the car and employ ocular analysis.  Oh, and use baby powder.

Thanks for the ideas.

DOUG

Sprinkle baby powder over everywhere you  have a fuel connection

If there is a leak somewhere it will show up wet.

Pressurize the system  as if the car were running

Don’t know how to do this on a carb car

Hi Doug,

Good luck with that fuel leak/fume issue. Apart from all the great advice from everyone so far, I wonder if the sudden change aspect may be a clue. Apart from simple old age of components, is it possible that there was some sort of specific trauma? For example, was any work done on the car that could have incidentally or accidentally stressed something such as a metal fuel line, causing a small crack in one of the metal fuel lines, especially at a solder/weld (??) point?  Incidentally, my 308gt4 used to be pretty stinky, but then again, it was always stinky, not a sudden change. My clothes stank of fumes after going for a drive. The fuel lines and filler pipe were all ok but it probably needed a carbie overhaul, as you could see around some of the joints in the carbies where there was fuel and grunge discolouration over time, but I never got it right before the engine dropped the exhaust valve and committed harakiri, so I replaced the whole thing with an injected engine and the stink is gone - a radical solution nonetheless and not ideal!  :)

Cheers,

Grahame

Hmmmmm – out of 73 responses to my question I get 71 who suggest I replace the fuel filler hose.

OK guys – that’s good enough for me.

I was teetering on the brink for awhile, but by golly, I’m gonna do it.

Thanks.

DOUG

Heh heh

Yikes – a carbed 308 GTS

No apparent gushing – no wet spots on the floor – but a definite smell.

Any hints of common trouble spots?

Thanks
