Too true.  The 458 is far from a photogenic F-stop friendly F car.  But a friend has one he ordered with red body, black roof (makes a world of difference) and the full bling carbon cabin (which deletes a lot of New York taxi plastic cabin trim and puts in real CF pieces.)  Overall, the car is now a legit stunner and I'd be a fool and pedant to fixate on the headlights or perhaps the overly slab-sided rear quarter when the car as a whole is so astounding to drive and, when tastefully built, stands more than a second glance.

The black roof over red body motivated me to order one, but I couldn't bring myself to roll the dice and expect anything other than the substantial loss on resale that has been the trend since the '08 crash.  The silver lining will be a healthy secondary market in time.  For now, that again brings me to the "sweet spot" in the secondary market being the Scuderia.

I'm a bit stuck in my ways of expecting a Ferrari to be gorgeous from every angle and you have to work hard to find a disappointing aspect.  Today, the 458 can be seen from many unfavorable angles and it requires some effort to find especially striking poses for the car (my favorite being from directly overhead ... or from the driver's seat while in motion ...)  Perhaps that's the necessary, pragmatic compromise of function over form -- something I applaud in any car maker, and something I can only hope Ferrari will continue to choose (despite the California being evidence to the contrary ... : )

To be opinionated tho – I have to see it in person before I judge a picture.  For instance, a million years ago, when I was poorer (sic) I wanted a poor mans Porsche looking car (two class mates has already snatched girls of interest from me and they were driving Porsche 356’s – THAT had to be it).  

 

Viola – the new VW Fast Back was coming out – Wowsers.  Can’t wait.  When I saw them in person – Echhh.

 

I felt Echhh about the F458 in picture - - then I saw a red one at Ferrari of San Francisco.  Changed my mind – bigger than I expected but quite nice.

I can't say I keep my ear to the ground waiting for Ferrari to release yet another wildly expensive car for Saudi's and Russian crime bosses to stash away in their bunkers.

 

As for design, so long as Ferrari sticks to the stick of LEDs adorning the headlights, I'm cold.  This F12 thing is a bulbous California (already itself a very porky Ferrari) and I just don't see the point in Ferrari playing the LED game.  Leave it to the entry level executive cars like Audi's to go around looking like fashion victims with their ridiculous eyebrows and snarling Nissans and Acuras.  Just silly.  The best thing Porsche does is provide the option to turn the things off so you don't get picked out of the traffic to take the speeding ticket when everyone else is doing 80 mph, too.

 

Of the modern day cars, the 599 GTO is the one and only.  Regardless of the price tag or the straight line performance specs, I'd take the GTO over this car just on instant sex appeal.

 

Personally, someone point me to the "Scuderia buyer's guide for Dummies" site ... I think I'll pass on the 458 and go "old school" with the 430 Scuderia and wait it out while Ferrari goes through another diode driven design dry spell.
