I was mainly finding my way to making the metaphor joke, but if someone is especially sensitive, there's always filters and multiple email accounts and folders.

Some just put email filters in place to send all non-essential emails to a separate folder/account/filter/label.  

I send only known addressee emails to my gPhone account, which filters out the noise of my email list habit.

It's one of those two-sided swords that nobody seems to be able to pull out of the rock ... like someone mixing metaphors to the point there's no way to decipher what the hell they're talking about ...
