What does "smit" stand for? I have a guess.

 

I haven't been too many places internationally, but have to say the absolute worst air quality I've ever seen is in Kabul. Much of the smog in the winter is due to the populace burning whatever they have available for heat, and since much of the populace doesn't have proper sewer systems they of course burn that. Therefore, one of my co-workers coined the term "SHOG" which stands for "sh*t on the ground."

When we lived in Shanghai from 2004-6, we had a total of 6 blue sky days.  Most were a result of a typhoon coming through and cleaning the air up.  It's worse than LA was in the 50's and 60's.
