a)  skip wearing jeans and branded clothing.  Easier to do when dressing more formal (think suit, no tie), boring white guy haircut, but not so short that people think you are military.  Easiest way is to wear a Jack Wolfskin fleece jacket, the everyone thinks you're a German.
b)  if you blend in, you're less likely to be a target.  Harder to do in Asia in my case, but I've never had any issues in Japan, Korea or China...
