When I replaced the hood struts on my Porsche 944 Turbo the biggest problem was preventing the hood from breaking the windshield. I placed several towels  between the hood wnd the windshield.
I used a dowel to support the hood on the side I was working on. last but not least I fashioned a LEVER with a slot in the end that just allowed the end of the strut to clear and flange on the hood would not.
 
I also drilled a 1/16 hole and used the bit to hold the tool on the strut and provide support for the flange. It turned out to be unnessary.
 
The job was tedious not hard but made me appreachiate replacing the engine bay struts on my 308.
 
I can post a picture of the tool if you think it would help this is a drawing not scale

Although my first impression is that they look much different than the struts now installed in my 1992 512TR, and I'm not known for my mechanical abilities, I'm willing to give the job a try.  But before I do, any tips (other than to find a friend who's experienced and competent to help)?
