Doug,
Ah, I was wondering if that's where you were going with that....
Being an engineer whose mind naturally deals with more precision...
Being a gear head with a family member who was a lawyer at CARB... <Boooo!>
Nominally, with minor depth of precision, at
any given time on the planet our air is 78.09% nitrogen. I couldn't imagine why anyone would go to any trouble to bump their tire pressure composition by only 1.9% Nitrogen. You were rounding off, I was over-analyzing.
Forum,
As far as Costco using Nitrogen... yes, they (and others) mount the tires, fill with nitrogen... so its a good thing but NOT how you do race tires. They leave some ambient pressure atmosphere in the tires. So there is more nitrogen than "normal" but not a nearly pure nitrogen fill. We don't have a large vacuum chamber like some of biggies, so we just mount the tires, band the circumference so we don't loose the bead,
vacuum pump the tires, lightly fill with nitrogen, pump down again, repeat and on the third time pressurize to a few pounds over what we know we'll need at the track. This ensures an almost pure nitrogen filled tire, unlike a tire shop. We have high pressure (2200 psig) nitrogen tanks at the track so we have plenty of gas for the tires, pressurizing the shocks once we have data, AND we use it to run all the air tools... or should we call them nitrogen tools.
And to the 3 people who PM'd me as to why my tractor tires are full of liquid? - WEIGHT!!
I use a product called RimGuard. It's 30% heavier than water, it won't freeze, it is environmentally friendly in case of a puncture and it won't rust steel wheels. Traction is an all important component of a Tractor. Weight improves traction. Weight at the wheels is a good thing. Weight *IN* the wheels is a wonderful thing. We fill the tires 80% full of liquid then put the valve back in the stem and use nitrogen to pressurize to the normal operating level. Nitrogen does not permeate the tire carcass as fast as air so it applies here as well for a vehicle that may have its tire pressure ignored for extended periods of time.

Ah ah ah - 80% N2 is ambient air unless you are in SoCal - then it's a
mixture of unburned pollutants, some O2, and 80% N2.

I always use nitrogen in the race cars... Don't really care on street cars.
Will use either. But I'm curious... Why 80% N2?
