We have a guy in our club who thought he bought a 'cherry' 355 Spyder...beautiful car, hardly a paint-chip on it...it ran great, sounded great....until one day he did a compression/leakdown while doing his own major.  The numbers were terrible.  Having rebuilt a 348 motor himself, he geared-up for the Suicide Mission of rebuilding the 355 himself.  The heads were shipped-off to Dave Helms of Boulder, CO.  The valve guides were so shot, the valves RATTLED in the heads.  New wiring harnesses with gold electrical contacts, the old contacts were corroded and sending squirrelly codes to the CPUs.  New cylinder liners.  Other pricey 'bits'.  He brought a box of some of his parts to a Ferrari BBQ we had last summer for alittle 'show-n-tell'.  The amount, and prices, of some of the parts he had to replace had me drinking straight bourbon.  Somehow, by the grace of God and many phone-calls to Boulder, he got his car running again.  His recollection of the experience?  "A total nightmare".....

We have another guy in our club with a 355 B....it hasn't run in two years.  We keep asking him to get working on it....I firmly believe he is deathly afraid-to, not knowing what BOMB lurks in his engine bay.....

That's all I'm gonna say about THAT.....

Would $15k pre-emptive be enough to ensure a near bulletproof ride?

My best bet I think would be to find the cheapest 355, then drop 15-20k and then take the plunge.

Wonder what Carobu has to say about the motor....

The 355 is probably one of the most-expensive machines to keep on the road, and that comes from some of the 'better' Independent Ferrari mechanics I know.  One told me they have a customer who is already $22K into his engine and that was just for the headers, cats, sensors and exhaust stuff.  That 'might' have included valves, I didn't ask.....but the OEM valve guides were total-crap.  Parts of that car were grossly under-engineered for enthusiastic driving.  They sure are pretty to look at.....

$2K for an oil change?  Hell no, but if there was some 'while you're in there' to keep it from LEAKING oil, that I'll believe.

Last night this dude at a party told me that the F355 oil change costs $2000......

Yep, $2k......"dry sump, gotta drop the bottom tray, etc".

Now, you may be thinking this is a typical 1% hater with no knowledge of cars, but apparently he races Formula Ford, works on his race car, teaches HPDE and has driven numerous exotics. In other words he supposedly knows things...

My gut tells me this is just a person who is not fond of the car (which is fine) and to demonstrate its supposed lack of merits, fabricates an outrageous claim to undermine it. He mistook my deference to him on racing knowledge to imply I knew nothing about cars, LOL.

Social conventions along with the fact that it's not important in the grand scheme of things means I'm not going to get into an argument about it. But man, it's pretty damn annoying, no??

Anyone run into similar BS?

ps - "The Ferrari that's good on maintenance is the 430.....not that bad"

----> Right, because it's cheaper to spend twice as much on a car to save money.
