There's a tool to measure the float height -- we sell them for Webers for around $45 IIRC.,  The other PM is to keep the ignition and carb adjustments correct to avoid backfires.    Some people will have a problem and immediately suspect the carb and start fiddling with the settings.   The Rule is to Always set the ignition settings as close as possible before messing with the carbs.  And once the ignition settings are to spec don't mess with the carbs unless you have the procedure to balance/synchronize them.  There's a specific sequence that should be followed to end up with properly adjusted carbs.  Obviously the more carbs the more difficulty - but there's the Side to Side flow, individual carb flow, idle speed, actuation of the accelerator pumps should all be in unison (some accel pump linkages allow individual adjustment some don't further complicating the problem), and on  and on --
I've worked on 2 single throat carbs - the easiest of multiple carb applications, (as in MGB), and my 911 had Webers (now has EFI) with 2 -3 barrel Webers which added greatly to the complexity - with these 2 carbs and their 6 throats being the cause for much frustration because there are so many variables. Of course the variables are one of the things that make Webers desirable- their almost infinite adjust-ability.    I can't imagine the difficulty in properly adjusting say,  a V12 with 6 -2 BBLs, or a 12 with 4 triple Webers (basically the same as I had on my 911 x 2).  lots of fun ..

At-least in a newer car, you have recourse with the factory.  I'm curious though - do carb fires 'just happen', or is there a preventative maintenance step someone can do with the float bowls to make-sure they don't occur?

Sad indeed, poor maintenance? I bet that owner will change his service priorities for his next ride.

Fires in the newer cars are scary...who knows what design flaws exist in a car that is virtually brand new??
