Agree, but my understanding is that Carb fires have a common, deliberate 'root-cause' of excess gasoline collecting in the float bowls (or somesuch) and was wondering if this was a result of improper tuning, gummed-up carbs, bad fuel, or some other cause that can be checked/measured/fixed before tragedy strikes....

Inspect fuel lines and connections...also remove cats.
Pretty much basic maintenance.
Carbed cars don't just randomly catch fire.
They also require very little, if any, special care outside of using a fuel stabilizer before long storage periods.

At-least in a newer car, you have recourse with the factory. I'm curious though - do carb fires 'just happen', or is there a preventative maintenance step someone can do with the float bowls to make-sure they don't occur?

Sad indeed, poor maintenance? I bet that owner will change his service priorities for his next ride. Fires in the newer cars are scary...who knows what design flaws exist in a car that is virtually brand new??
