Hi Gang, I saw an episode of "The Renaissance Man" (Alain de Cadendat) on Velocity this morning that featured a Lancia D50. It was one of several recreations of this amazing race car - amazing IMO, but not necessarily all that successful - and was part of a industry that has grown up mostly in England (I think) that recreates old sports and racing cars like the D50, shark-nosed Ferrari F1, AM DBR1 and others. It seems the annual Goodwood revival with all of its races for classics has created this industry. So may of the great old classics are no longer available because they have been destroyed or are in museums or are just too precious to take a chance to race. Fanzio can be seen driving a D50 at Monaco in this You Tube Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9-BZ0NbriI They interviewed the owner of a shop that specialized in recreations of historic sports and F1 cars and evidently business is pretty good. I thought it was pretty amazing that people are willing to spend money to recreate those grand old machines, then risk them on the track. One of my favorites is the Maserati 250F - such a awesome machine... LarryT |
