I had the same problem and it was brought home in dramatic fashion. Jan 2005 on my maiden drive home in my 'new to me' 1981 308 GTSi, I was passed by an old station wagon,  a couple of seconds of the passing a rear blew out on the station wagon, slinging  the rear end into the divider creating a  'Day of Thunder' smokescreen, I drove to where I last saw the wagon and missed everything.  Being low on funds, I bought original euquipment14" wheel and a set Sumy's for less the than 1 TRX tire.  Since then I replaced the 14's with 16"s with Mich Pilot rubber.

Sounds like you're stuck.  You can spend hefty-dollars on crappy TRX rubber (bad idea), or you can upgrade, which will require purchasing a set of 16" rims first, THEN a new set of tires.  The factory rims on ebay are outrageous - the sets I saw all needed refinishing to approach stock appearance, and the sellers were asking for the moon.  Even for the aftermarket sets.

1981 308 GTSi, Michelin trx 220 55 vr 390. They (4) are 10 years old and I do around 1600 miles every summer. I paid $1200. can. back in 2003 tax and installation included.

They have 5 lines of treads. The inside line of treads is totally worn at the rear (both sides of course). The rest is far from new, but could easily last a few more summers. The front ones show wear, but at least are equally worn.

I'll do a tire rotation this winter of course. But what else could I do to prevent the 2 front ones that I'll put in the rear to become like the present rear ones ?

Coker tire ($429)
Shopbot.ca ($563)

I don't want to pay that kind of money.

Thank you!
