I've had four of the type 997 911's, and enjoyed each of them. Perhaps none really more than my beloved 996 GT3, but certainly when I had the 997 all wheel drive, wide body cabriolet with dual clutch transmission (that's 997.2 C4S PDK Cab in Porsche abbreviation) I found it to be a consummate all-rounder from studded snow tires to RA1 track tires and winning time trials. The examples of the 997 priced under $50K become somewhat compromised by 911 standards for the era (2005 2009,) but in the context of other cars priced under $50K, I think the 997 is a lot of car -- if you wanted to up the ante to 2009-2012 model year type 997's, so-called 997.2, you can get PDK, which makes for just about a perfect all-rounder daily driver and tunz of fun. Still, my 2007 GT3 ("997.1") was really one of those "never should have sold it ... never ... never" and I got another one, a year later, but by then my then 2010 GT3 RS arrived, so it was all a bit of overlap and I needed another two-seater 911 like I needed an excuse to buy yet another race trailer just as a "temporary" (permanent) garage. But of all the 997's I had, the PDK in C4S (wide body) and in Cabriolet ... just great, great cars and ample fun on public roads without becoming a danger to others.
While you'll realistically get about 80% of the 996 GT3 performance out of a 997.1 Carrera 2S (if you flog the Carrera and you don't wring out the rpm's on the GT3) you will bet 10 times the all-rounder pleasure and the daily driver that you just plain love to drive and always feel like there's an occasion for a bit of an extra detour to have a more enjoyable route to your destination. I'd guess 2007 is the "right" year for quality and reliability. You'd want to check on Rennlist and survey prices aggressively because these cars are cognoscenti in-demand, so you have to be astute and well-informed (true for anything in life that you really want to enjoy) but especially true for the later model 911's, not all of which were a walk in the park in terms of reliability (check our IMS issues, etc.) Once you get a reliable one, maintenance is (was) insanely cheap ... I remember the first service on the GT3 was just plain trivial (a couple of hundred dollars) compared to minor fixit visits to the dealer in other marques, and certainly things like mpg and total cost of ownership of usually wide grins of delight compared to other cars I've enjoyed despite their costs.
As for Porsches, that's a great era to consider. Based on your descriptions, I'd be thinking of a GTO (aka Holden Monaro) or a 5 Series or earlier M5.

Actually, 'Deep, you'll find 99.9% of the performance of the 996 GT3 in a well-sorted 997 C2S, and you actually CAN fit adults in semi-reasonable comfort (assuming they're not of ginormous Big Head Liu dimensions) in the back seat. I had two 5'7" bridesmaids in the back for the 2.5 hour drive from a wedding and both were comfortable enough to fall asleep back there. And, with CPO your fix it cost is $0, services are every 20K miles (and under $200 at an indy shop) and the oil is super easy (and cheap) to change yourself. I paid $55 for my last oil change (filter, o-ring, Motul 8100 XS oil) doing it myself in my garage. Have her drive the 997, VERY different from the Boxster, I was very surprised.

Not sure about the real rear seat room in a regular 911 though.
She has had a Boxter recently, so not sure if she will be keen on it just yet.
I predict that maintenance would be above our $0 budget?

2008 Carrera 2S. At least, that's what I got for the same criteria.
