A local friend here in Telford bought a new 328 engine from Maranello in 2005 when they had a fire sale on all the classic Ferrari parts. He put it in his 308gt4 to make a track day car to use on club days with the FOC. The engine was fitted by an excellent local mechanic. He has used it twice because the club won't let him run it in the classic race series so the car just sits in his garage for the past 9 years. He lost even more interest when he bought Rod Stewarts 360 Spider. Funny thing is that engine has like no miles on It and is probably worth more than the entire car put together for somebody needing a NEW 328 engine...

Give me a 82 Countach S that's been converted to Electromotive so I can jump-in, turn-the-key, and GO-GO-GO-GO, not sit there and dicker with the choke and fuel-pump spin up, and pray to Jesus that something isn't 'right' in the engine-bay behind me and my car won't turn into a flaming Bomb/BBQ with me inside it......if I have to live with that fear every time I go to start/drive a car, I need a better mechanic or I need a better car.  Most go with the better car.

 

Don't get me wrong, I love the 308 GT/4 - back-seats, a trunk, excellent weight distribution, rigid chassis, nice cockpit.  Bertone styling ain't for everybody, but this works...I agree about the Dino badging, the Euro Series 1 trim is better...I've seen a GT/4 on the track with a QV engine dropped in the engine bay, and that car was FLYING.  I'd love to stuff a worked 3.2L engine from a 328 into a car like this...it WILL fit without mods...the boys at Symbolic were using them as coffee tables for awhile, I know somebody who has one in a barn locally.....aaahhh!  Now we be jammin'.

Only problem I find now with our 308 GTS which is in the restoration process are parts are Ferrari 288 GTO expensive and one would do better looking for replacement rubber parts in a convent in France than we can any place else.  Drat

I agree that the 308 GT/4 has gotten better with age and is a very cool car. While it is very, very similar to a 308 GTB, there are enough differences to make it special in its own way.

 

It's basically what a 308 would look like if Lamborghini created it....just look at the Urracco, and the taillights of the Jalpa.

 

A '73 series I, standard ("euro") spec would be my pick, modded with 16" QV wheels and modern rubber. I'd also prefer it if it had Dino badges as opposed to Ferrari. Don't believe you see too many of those around. 

 

This car would be more interesting to me than just about all other 308s except the carbureted euro GTBs, and maybe even the GTS as well. GTBi/GTSi, and any 308 with US bumpers is too much for me to handle. 

 

Some of the GT4s have the same problem of course. 

 

Carburetors and cars old enough not to need catalytic converters.....life is good. :)

clYde finds anything with a carburetor to be a firey death trap. That may play a role in his dislike ofvthe GT4. He hates my 308GTB for that very reason. But there is nothing on Earth that sounds better than a bank of Webers.  And I have to admit that my all time favorite auto-music comes from the six dual choke Webers on a first generation Countach. My 308GTB comes in second. And I bet Rob's GT4 ties with it for that position.

 

You know what opinions are like, and mine is no different. Such is life.
