Isn't part of the appeal (and value) of the GTO in the fact that it was a "street" car that could be driven home after winning a race?

This dual purpose potential was always a big part of the values.

Also, the 250 TR is very attractive but the GTO has always been considered to be more pretty by collectors.

I personally find the first series TR to be stunning though.

You aren't wrong - BUT when talking about a multi-million dollar sale. Winning LeMans is more attractive to the history of the car and more beneficial to the value than not winning LeMans. If you're trying to get your wife pregnant actually doing it is better than giving a "not to shabby a performance."

The 250GTO was a GT car - ie with homologation mumbers (hence its name) with engine size restrictions etc. 

As always, the prototypre care have far less restrictions (stil the same today).

In its first season at Le Mans (62)GTOs came 2nd, 3rd and 6th, behing the prototype 330 TRi LM (whih incidentally fetched a massive amount of money when it was last sold in I think 2007).

The next year they came 2nd 4th and 6th only beaten by the 250P (prototype - with a mid engine - in 1st and 3rd) and the larger engined 330LMB in 5th.

None too shabby a perforamnce.
