I think that is a bit of a broad brush approach.

The 250GTO was a GT car - ie with homologation mumbers (hence its name) with
engine size restrictions etc.

As always, the prototypre care have far less restrictions (stil the same today).

In its first season at Le Mans (62)GTOs came 2nd, 3rd and 6th, behing the
prototype 330 TRi LM (whih incidentally fetched a massive amount of money when
it was last sold in I think 2007).

The next year they came 2nd 4th and 6th only beaten by the 250P (prototype -
with a mid engine - in 1st and 3rd) and the larger engined 330LMB in 5th.

None too shabby a perforamnce.
