Charles notes “In the absence of a good ground, electricity can take a surprisingly diverse path through other systems to get to the ground it wants.” As in the generator red light on the dash. When the gen or alt is not making enough electricity, the current flows thru the light to ground and lights up. Once the field is excited and enough electricity is being produced the current flows the other way and eliminates the ground. That little light is mighty darn important for an alternator to work properly. Easy check to see if its burned out – Key on engine off – light on? Good. No? replace light WITH the SAME wattage. That seems to be important too. DOUG |
