Michael,

Thank you for the quick part number reference -- I punched it into Amazon, Ebay, Rock Auto, etc and have already purchased via eBay for $17.00 including USPS priority shipping. Perhaps I'll have it for a weekend job! :-)

All,

First, I have to say that I love that in the past couple days the list has taken a little tech tilt. I miss those days. I guess most of those conversations are over on f-chat or somewhere else now, and I do sometimes go on there to look up if someone's done a certain job or something like that, but I don't go over to f-chat to banter back and forth like we used to here.

I spent a tiny bit of time with the 308 tonight and found that if I turned on the A/C, as expected, one cooling fan does come on. If I disconnect the sender at the bottom of the radiator and touch the two female spade connectors together then both cooling fans come on. Therefore it must be the sender. Maybe I'll go to f-chat to see if anyone has quoted a specific part number such as the VW part that Clyde and Todd reference above.

I also pulled out my old brittle rear trunk cover (the black vinyl thing with the zipper that usually isn't working). Mine has the plastic zipper and I've replaced the slider about 4-5 times by taking it to a local shoe repair shop. Each time they charge me about $7. The thing is so brittle now that next time it might all fall apart when I pull it off of the trunk!

I have the wiring diagram at home but haven't pulled it out yet. When you say "switch" I assume you mean the sender at the bottom of the radiator? With the way that sender works, are you suggesting that it simply "listens" for a certain temperature and then closes the circuit when that temp is reached? Therefore if I short the two spade connectors the fans should come on?

I think the 308 uses the same style thermoswitch as my VWs.
You are correct, the two terminals on the switch are only connected together electrically when the coolant temp is above the rated temp for the switch.
If you pull the two wires off the thermoswitch, turn the ignition on (I'm assuming the fans only work with the ignition on) and touch the two wires together (or use a jumper wire), the fans should come on.  If they do, that means the rest of the fan wiring and fuses is OK and the switch is toast.  If the fans do not come on, then that implies that some part of the wiring to the fans or the fans themselves are faulty.
